사사기 21장은 이스라엘 공동체가 스스로 만든 서약과 폭력 속에 무너지는 모습을 보여줍니다. 그들이 베냐민 지파를 멸절시킨 후 그들의 생존을 위해 또 다른 살육과 납치를 자행하는 이스라엘의 붕괴한 사회의 말로를 비판적으로 조명합니다.

1. 베냐민 지파의 멸절 위기

폭망한 베냐민 지파에게 이스라엘은 선포합니다. 절대 베냐민 지파에게 딸을 주지 않겠다고 합니다. 이는 지파의 씨를 말리겠다는 것입니다. 그렇게 광기에 휩쓸린 감정적 결단은 돌이킬 수 없는 공동체 파괴를 초래하게 됩니다.

 

1. Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, "No one of us shall give his daughter in marriage of Benjamin." 2 And the people came to Bethel and sat there till evening before God, and they lifted up their voices and wept bitterly. 3. And they said, "O Lord, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that today there should be one tribe lacking in Israel?" 4. And the next day the people rose early and built there an altar and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. 5 And the people of Israel said, "Which of all the tribes of Israel said, "Which of all the tribes of Israel did not come up in the assembly to the Lord?" For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah, saying, "He shall surely be put to death." 6 And the people of Israel had compassion for Benjamin their brother and said, "One tribe is cut off from Israel this day. 7 What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the Lord that we will not give them any of our daughters for wives?'

2. 이스라엘의 뒤늦은 후회

이스라엘은 뒤늦게 사태의 심각성을 깨닫고 통곡합니다. 한 지파가 사라지는 것은 이들에게 재앙이기 때문입니다.

 

8. And they said, "What one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah?" And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead, to the assembly. 9 For when the people were mustered, behold, not one of the inhabiants of Jabesh-gilead was there. 10 So the congregation sent 12,000 of their bravest men there and commanded them. "Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword; also the women and the little ones. 11 This is what you shall do: every male and every woman that has lain with a make you shall devote to destruction." 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead 400 young virgins who had not known a man by lying with him, and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

3. 배신자 취급 당한 야베스 길르앗

 13. Then the whole congregation sent word to the people of Benjamin who were at the rock of Rimmon and proclaimed peace to them. 14 And Benjamin returned at that time. And they gave them the woman whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead, but they were not enough for them. 15 And the people had compassion on Benjamin because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

4. 편법적 해결책

16. Then the elders of the congregation said, "What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?" 17 AND THey said, "There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, that a tribe may not be blotted out from Israel. 18 Yet we cannot give them wives from our daughters."For the people of Israel had sworn, "Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin." 19 So they said, "Behold, there is the yearly feast of the Lord at Shiloh, which is north of Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah." 20 AND THEY commanded the people of Benjamin, saying, "Go and lie in ambush in the vineyards 21 and watch. If the daughters of Shiloh come out of the vineyards and snatch each man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 22 And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them, 'Grant them graciously to us, because we did not take for each man of them to them, else you would now be guilty." 23 AND the people of Benjamin did so and took their wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they carried off. Then they went and retruned to their inheritance and rebuilt the towns and lived in them. 24 And the people of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.

 

이스라엘 공동체가 벤야민 지파에게 딸을 주지 않겠다고 한 약속은 있으니 호구지책으로, 일단 불참한 길르앗 사람들 숙청하고 딸들은 벤야민 지파 남자들에게 줄 생각으로 보입니다. 뱉어 놓은 말이 있으니 이를 어떻게 수습하나 하다가 축제를 가장해서 벤야민 사람들이 납치를 해가도록 합니다. 일종의 보쌈을 허락하겠다는 거죠. 이런 비슷한 패턴은 고대 풍습에서 꽤 자주 보이는데요. 베냐민 사건이 고유한 것이 아니고 당시 전쟁이 만연했기에 다른 문화권에서 흔히 발생하는 현상이라고 합니다. 다만 베냐민 사건의 경우는, 신을 믿는다는 이들이 편법으로 교묘하게 약속을 어겼다는 것이죠.

5. 당시에 왕이 없었다

25. In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

21장 마지막 문장은 당시에 왕이 없었다. 그래서 모두가 자신의 눈에 맞는 일을 했다고 나옵니다. 왕이 없는 혼탁한 시대라 모든 게 엉망진창이었던 겁니다. 정치적 구심점이 없다는 것은 이스라엘 공동체가 무정부 상태, 도덕적 아노미에 빠졌음을 표현하는 것입니다. 이는 지속적으로 질서없는 자유의 위험성을 고발하고 있음을 알려주고 있습니다.
