이삭 줍는 루스와 보아스의 만남 루스 2장

루스 2장은 이방인 여성의 생존 투쟁이 우연과 섭리 속에 펼쳐지는 장면을 담고 있습니다. 그러나 이것은 단순한 우연의 이야기가 아닙니다. 고대 사회의 제도, 인간관계, 그리고 삶을 둘러싼 보이지 않는 질서를 섬세하게 드러내는 서사입니다.

1. 생존을 위해 밭으로 간 루스

나오미 남편 엘리멜렉의 친족 중에 보아스라는 사회적 지위도 높고 재력가가 있었습니다. 

1. Now Naomi had a relative of her husband's, a worthy man of the clan of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz. 2 And Ruth the Moabite said to Naome, "Let me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find favour." And she said to eher, "Go, my daughter." 3 So she set out and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers, and she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the clan of Elimelech. 4 And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem. And he said to the reapers, "The Lord be with you!" And they answered, 'The Lord bless you." 5 Then Boaz said to his young man who was in charge of the reapers, "Whose young woman is this?" 6. And the servant who was in charge of the reapers answered, "She is the young Moabite woman, who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab. 7 She said, 'Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves after the reapers.' So she came, and she has continued from early morning until now, except for a short rest."

 

1장에서 등장했듯, 루스는 모압 출신으로 나오미의 아들과 결혼하였지만 사별한 후 시어머니 나오미와 함께 베들레헴으로 돌아왔습니다. 당연히 고부는 생계가 막막했습니다. 그래서 루스는 이삭을 주우러 밭으로 나가고, 우연히 부유한 친족 보아스의 밭에 들어가게 됩니다. 고대 문학에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 운명적 장치입니다. 참고로 고대 이스라엘 사회에서는 수확 후 밭에 남은 이삭을 가난한 자, 고아, 과부, 외국인이 주울 수 있도록 법으로 규정해 두었습니다. 그래서 루스는 그것으로 하루를 연명하려 했던 것입니다.

2. 루스를 특별히 대하는 보아스

8. Then Boaz said to Ruth, "Now, listen, my daughter, do not go to glean in another field or leave this one, but keep close to my young women. 9 Let your eyes be on the field that they are reaping, and go after them. Have I not charged the young men not to touch you? And when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink what the young men have drawn." 10 Then she fell on her face, bowing to the ground, and said to him, "Why have I found favour in your eyes, that you should take notice of me, since I am a goreigner?"

 11 But Boaz answered her, "All that you have done for your mother in law since the death of your husband has been fully told to me, and how you left your father and mother and your native land and came to a people that you did not know before. 12 The Lord repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge!" 13 Then she said, "I have found favour in your eyes, my lork, for you have comforted me and spoken kindly to your servant, though I am not one of your servants."

 

친척이라고는 해도 보아스가 루스에게 하는 행동은 단순 호의 이상으로 보입니다. 나이도 많은데 흑심이 있지 않고서는 이방 여인을 저리 잘해주는 것이 뭔가가 있어 보입니다.

3. 눈치 챈 나오미

14. And at mealtime Boaz said to her, "Come here and eat some bread and dip your morsel in the wine." So she sat beside the reapers, and he passed to her roasted grain. And she ate until she was satisfied, and she had some left over. 15 When she rose to glean, Boaz instructed his young men, saying, "Let her glean even among the sheaves, and do not reproach her. 16 And also pull out some from the bundles for her and leave it for her to glean, and do not rebuke her." 

 

예상했던 환대가 이어집니다. 보아스는 루스를 집으로 초대해서 볶은 보리를 주며 충분히 먹게 하고 남은 음식까지 싸주었습니다.

 

17. So she gleaned in the field until evening. Then she beat out what she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley. 18 And she took it up and went into the city. Her mother in law saw what she had gleaned. She also brought out and gave her what food she had left over after being satisfied. 19 AND Her mother in law said to her, "Where did you glean today? And where have you worked? Blessed be the man who took notice of you." So she told her mother in law with whom she had worked and said, "The man's name with whom I worked today is Boaz." 20 And Naomi said to her daughter in law, "May he be blessed by the Lord, whose kindness has not forsaken the living or the dead!" Naomi also said to her, 'The man is a close relative of ours, one of our redeemers.' 21 And Ruth the Moabite said, "Besides, he said to me, 'You shall keep close by my young men until they have finished all my harvest." 22 AND Naomi said to Ruth, her daughter in law, "It is good, my daughter, that you go out with his young women, lest in another field you be assaulted." 23 So she kept close to the young women of Boaz, gleaning until the end of the barley and wheat harvests. And she lived with her mother in law.

 

보아스의 친절은 여기서 끝나지 않고 루스가 이삭을 더 쉽게 주울 수 있도록 일부러 곡식을 떨어뜨리라고 합니다. 그러면서 루스에게 혼도 내지 말라고 합니다. 저녁까지 루스는 남들보다 월등히 많은 양을 가지고 집으로 돌아갑니다. 그리고 시어머니에게 자신을 그렇게 배려해준 사람이 보아스였다고 말합니다. 이에 시어머니 나오미는 감동하여 그가 우리의 기업 무를 자 중 하나라고 합니다. 이는 마치 그를 예비 사위로 보는 인상을 받습니다.

4. 기뻐하는 나오미

뭐, 그냥 둘만 살아도 그럭저럭 잘 살 것 같고, 어차피 대를 이을 자식도 남편도 없는데 기업 무를 자를 찾았다는 의미를 이해하지 못하겠습니다. 단순한 생각으로 시어머니는 자신들의 생활을 책임질 부유한 남자가 며느리 루스를 점찍었다는 데 흡족해 한 것 같은데요. 이것을 이렇게까지 의미를 두고 신성시한다는 것이 이해가 안 갑니다. 아무래도 다음에 태어날 생을 위한 빌드업이라는 게 누가 봐도 뻔하지 않습니까? 그저 다윗 왕조 정당화라고 보입니다. 사실 너무 미천하고 합당하지 않은 행동을 한 것이잖아요. 조상이 모압땅에 가서 아들들은 거기 출신 며느리를 얻은 것도요. 그리고 다윗왕의 태생이 모압 출신 여성에 재혼이라... 그러니 이렇게 아름답게 미화하려고 한 것 같습니다.
