술고래들이 부어라 마셔라 하는 중인 모비딕 챕터 3 스파우트 인 분위기

이스마엘은 자신과 함께 침대를 공유할 작살꾼이 누굴까 궁금해하던 중 뱃사람들이 스파우트 인에 모여 흥청망청 술을 마시는 모습을 목격하였고 그중에서 가장 두드러지며 점잖은 벌킹턴을 눈여겨보게 됩니다.

모비딕 챕터 3장 스파우트 인에 들어가다

 

 

At last some four or five of us were summoned to our meal in an adjoining room. It was cold as Iceland- no fire at all- the landlord said he couldn't afford it. Nothing but two dismal tallow candles, each in a winding sheet. We were fain to button up our monkey jackets, and hold to our lips cups of scalding tea with our half frozen fingers. But the fare was of the most substantial kind- not only meat and potatoes, but dumplings; good heavens! dumplings for supper! One young fellow in a green box coat, addressed himself to these dumplings in a most direful manner.

 

 

 

하숙생 밥먹이듯이 네다섯 명이 모여 저녁을 먹기 위해 모였습니다. 방안에는 냉기가 가득했지만 여관 주인은 불을 제공할 여유가 없다고 합니다.  두 개의 미약한 양초 불에만 겨우 의존한 채 이스마엘은 몽키 재킷을 목 끝까지 여미며 추위에 떨고 있습니다. 그리고 반쯤 얼은 손으로 뜨거운 차를 입술에 대고 있었고요. 그렇지만 음식은 요금에 비해서 실속이 있었습니다. 고기뿐만 아니라 감자에 덤플링까지 나왔다고 좋아합니다. 그래서 그린 박스코트를 입은 한 남자가 무서운 기세로 식탐을 발휘했습니다.

 

 

 나의 파트너는 누구인가

 

'My boy, ' I whispered, 'that ain't the harpooneer, is it?'

'Oh, no, ' said he, looking a sort of diabolically funny, 'the harpooneer is a dark complexioned chap. He never eats dumplings, he don't-he eats nothing but steaks, and likes' em rare.'

 

이스마엘은 주인장에게 혹시 저분이 작살꾼은 아니겠죠?라고 물었더니 주인장이 악동같이 웃으며 하푸니어는 어두운 안색을 하고 있고 절대로 덤플링을 먹지 않는다고 답합니다. 그러면서 그는 스테이크만 먹는데 그것도 피뚝뚝 레어로만 먹는다고 합니다. 차라리 게걸스럽게 덤플링을 먹는 남자가 더 낫게 느껴지는 건 왜일까요.

 

'The devil he does, ' says I. 'Where is that harpooneer? Is he here?'

'He'll be here afore long.' was the answer.

 I could not help it, but I began to feel suspicious of this 'dark complexioned' harpooneer. At any rate, I made up my mind that if it so turned out that we should sleep together, he must undress and get into bed before I did.

 

 

 

 

주인장은 작살잡이가 악마 같다고 합니다. 이스마엘이 그가 언제 오냐구 물었더니 곧 올 거라고 합니다. 당연히 이스마엘 입장에서 낯선 환경에 누군지도 모르지만 어두운 안색의 범상치 않을 것처럼 느껴지는 룸메이트가 궁금할 수밖에 없습니다. 의심 가득한 심정을 담고서 말입니다. 그리고 그는 어쨌거나 그가 자신과 함께 침대를 쓰게 된다면 그가 먼저 옷을 벗고 잘 수 있게 배려해야 한다고 보는 입장인 것 같습니다. 

 

 

 

 Supper over, the company went back to the bar-room, when, knowing not what else to do with myself, I resolved to spend the rest of the evening as a looker on.

 

 Presently arioting noise was heared without. Starting up, the landlord cried, 'That's the Grampus's crew. I seed her reported in the offing this morning; a three years' voyage, and a full ship. Hurrah, boys; now we'll have the latest news from the Feegees.'

 

저녁 식사가 끝나고 이스마엘을 비롯한 일행들은 바 룸으로 갔습니다. 그리고 마땅히 할 일도 없어서 사람들이나 구경하면서 시간을 때우기로 합니다. 밖에서 시끌벅적한 소리가 들려서 주인에게 물었더니 돌고래호 선원들이 오늘 아침 3년 만의 항해를 마치고 만선으로 돌아왔다고 합니다. 그러면서 피지에서부터의 새 소식을 들을 수 있을 거라고 하네요.

 

 

 

 

 선원들이 들이닥치다

 

A tramping of sea boots was heard in the entry; the door was flung open, and in rolled a wild set of mariners enough. Enveloped in their shaggy watch coats, and with their heads muffled in woollen comforters, all bedarned and ragged, and their beards. stiff with icicles, they seemed an eruption of bears from Labrador.

 

장화를 신고 털 옷으로 단단히 무장했음에도 고드름으로 뻣뻣해진 수염을 한 이들은 마치 캐나다 레브라도 지역에서 튀어나온 곰들처럼 보였다고 합니다. 

 

 

 

왕좌의 게임에서 본 스타크 가문 같아 보였으려나요?

 

They had just landed from their boat, and this was the first house they entered. No wonder, then, that they made a straight wake for the whale's mouth-the bar- when the wrinkled little old Jonah, there officiating, soon poured them out brimmers all round. One complained of a bad cold in his head, upon which Jonah mixed him a pitch-like potion of gin and molasses, which he swore was a sovereign cure for all colds and catarrhs whatsoever, never mind of how long standing, or whether caught off the coast of Labrador, or on the weather side of an ice-island.

 

배에서 내리자마자 첫 집으로 스파우트 인에 도착한 선원들은 고래 이빨 바 앞에 몰려들었고 그중 한 사람은 감기를 호소했습니다. 그래서 요나는 진과 당밀 같은 것을 섞어 자신만의 처방전인 물약을 만들어 주며 어떤 순간에도 낫는다는 등의 특효약이라며  호언장담을 하였는데요. 

 

 

 

 

 뱃사람들의 유희

 

The liquor soon mounted into their heads, as it generally does evern with the arrantest topers newly landed from sea, and they began capering about most obstrrperously.

 

거친 뱃사람들이 으레 그렇듯이 모처럼 육지에 와서 기분을 만끽한 선원들은 술고래가 되기 시작했습니다. 가뜩이나 술고래였던 사람들이 육지에서 술을 마시니 더 헤까닥 한 것 같습니다. 

 

 

 I observed, however, that one of them held somewhat aloof, and though he seemed desirous not to spoil the hilarity of his shipmates by his own sober face, yet upon the whold he refrained from making as much noise as the rest.

 

그러한 가운데 주변 분위기를 망치지 않는 선에서 다소 관조적 혹은 냉담한 분위기로 동떨어진 사람이 이스마엘 눈에 띈 모양입니다. 

 

 

This man interested me at once; and since the sea-gods had ordained that he should become my shipmate(though but a sleeping-partner one, so far as this narrative is concerned), I will here venture upon a little description of him.

 

아마도 이스마엘은 이왕 잠을 같이 잘 거면 점잖고 얌전한 사람과 함께하고 싶었기에, 그를 픽한 것 같습니다. 그리고 여기에 바다의 신들이 마치 운명이라고 속삭였다는 듯이 체면을 건 것인지 그렇게 바란 것인지는 모르겠으나 그에 대한 묘사를 시전하고 있습니다.

 

 

 

He stood full six feet in height, with noble shoulders, and a chest like a coffer-dam. I have seldom seen such brawn in a man. His face was deeply brown and burnt, making his white teeth dazzling by the contrast; while in the deep shadows of his eyes floated some reminiscences that did not seem to give him much joy. His voice at once announced that he was a Southerner, and from his fine stature, I thought he must be one of those tall mountaineers from the Alleganian Ridge in Virginia. When the revelry of his companions had mounted to its height, this man slipped away unobserved, and I saw n o more of him till he became my comrade on the sea. In a few minutes, however, he was missed by his shipmates, and being, it seems, for some reason a huge favorite with them, they raised a cry of 'Bulkington! Bulkington! where's Bulkington?' and darted out of the house in pursuit of him.

 

 

 

마치 그리스인 조르바를 연상케 할 정도로 거칠고 투박하고 기골이 장대한 인상으로 표현하였는데요. 180센티미터가 넘는 키에 갈색으로 그을린 얼굴로 유난히 하얀 치아 등등 범상치 않은 외모 느낌이 풍기는데요. 그의 목소리는 남부 출신이라는 것을 짐작케 했고 그의 산만한 덩치는 버지니아 주의 앨러게니 산맥 출진의 산지인이라고 확신하였습니다. 엘러게니 산을 찾아보니 아주 험준한 곳이더라고요.

 

여하튼 그는 왁자지껄 환희에 절어 취한 동료들 사이를 슬그머니 빠져나와 밖으로 나갔지만 동료들은 그새를 못 참고 그의 이름인 벌킹턴을 셀 수 없이 외쳐댔습니다. 벌킹턴 어디 갔냐, 이 자식 왜 안 보여 뭐 이렇게 찾았는데 이스마엘 눈에는 그가 친구들에게 어지간히 인기가 많은 사람임을 짐작케 했습니다.
