이삭의 우물에 얽힌 사연들 창세기 26장편

가나안 땅의 기근이 시작되어 이삭이 그랄로 이주를 하게 되고 하나님은 이집트에 가지 말라는 경고를 받습니다. 그랄에 머물면서 하나님의 축복으로 이삭은 막대한 부를 쌓았고 블레셋 사람들의 시기와 모함을 받게 됩니다. 우물만 파면 뺏어가고 등 분쟁이 생기지만 나중에 화해를 합니다. 하지만 이삭 부부의 또 다른 근심은 자식 문제로 이어집니다.

 

 

창조주가 이삭에게 한 약속

 

 

창세기 26장

1. Now there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Gerar to Abimelech king of the Philistines.

 

famine: 기근, 굶주림, 고갈, 결핍.

 

2. And the Lord appeared to him and said, " Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land of which I shall tell you.

3. Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I wil establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father.

4. I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, 

5. because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws."

 그 아버지에 그 아들 이삭이 또 아내를 여동생이라고

 

6. So Isaac settled in Gerar.

7. When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, "She is my sister", for he feared to say, "My wife," thinking, "lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah". because she was attractive in appearance.

8. When he had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac laughing with Rebekah his wife.

9. So Abimelech called Isaac and said, "Behold, she is your wife. How then could you say, 'She is my sister?" Isaac said to him, "Because I though, 'Lest I die because of her.'"

10. Abimelech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us."

11. So Abimelech warned all the people, saying, "Whoever touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death."

 

창세기 26장 6절에서 11절은 같은 패턴의 에피소드가 등장합니다. 아브라함이 이집트와 블레셋에 정착했을 때 아름다운 사라로 인해 자신이 죽을 것이 두려워 동생이라고 속였는데요. 대를 이어 이삭도 똑같은 행동을 합니다. 이삭이 그랄 지역에 도착하여 이삭은 와이프 레베카의 미모 때문에 자신이 죽을까 두려워 동생이라고 속입니다.

 

그런데 아비멜렉왕이 보니 아무리 봐도 둘 사이가 부부 같아서 추궁하니 죽을까 겁이나서 그랬다고 합니다. 그러자 아비멜렉은 하마터면 우리 사람 중 하나가 너의 와이프를 겁탈했을 수도 있었다며 식겁하듯 이삭과 레베카에게 얼씬도 못하게 명령합니다.

 

 

 

 

여기서 아이벨렉 왕이 아브라함 그때의 왕이라는 사람도 있고 아니란 사람도 있는데요. 우연치고는 너무 존똑이라 황당할 지경입니다. 그리고 아비멜렉은 무슨 죄가 있다고 이런 봉변을 대를 이어 혹은 두 번이나 당하는지 모르겠습니다. 그리고 아브라함과 이삭은 무슨 복에 반복적인 거짓말을 하는데도 하늘이 지켜주고 왕이 지켜주고 그러는지 모르겠네요.

 

 이삭이 부자가 될 때까지 남의 땅에서 축복을 주는 창조주

 

12. And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord blessed him, 

13. and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy.

14. He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants, so that the Philistines envied him.

15.(Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father.)

16. And Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we."

 

아비멜렉의 관용으로 이삭은 남의 땅에서 경작을 해서 백배로 수확을 하였고 이는 모두 창조주의 축복 덕분이었습니다. 이삭은 부자가 되었고 창조주는 그가 막대한 부자가 될 때까지 계속적으로 지원하였습니다. 그러자 블레셋 즉 팔레스타인 사람들이 시기심이 증폭하여 아브라함 대에 만들어 둔 우물을 흙으로 채워 버립니다. 그리고 아비멜렉 왕이 당신이 우리보다 더 막강하니 이 땅에서 떠나라고 합니다. 

 

 

 다툼의 우물(Esek)과 적대의 우물(Sitnah)

 

 

 

17. So Isaac departed from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar and settled there.

 

defarted: (최근에) 죽은, 고인, 죽은 사람, 지나간, 과거의.

 

18. And Isaac dug again the wells of water that had been dug in the days of Abraham his father, which the Philistines had stopped after the death of Abraham. And he gave them the names that his father had given them.

19. But when Isaac's servants dug in the valley and found there a well of spring water,

20. the herdsmen of Gerar quarrelled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, " The water is ours." So he called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him.

21. Then they dug another well, and they quarrelled over that also, so he called its name Sitnah.

 

뭔가 원주민과 이방인의 결정적인 다툼을 보여주고 있는 에피소드처럼 느껴지는데요. 아브라함이 만든 우물을 이삭의 종들이 다시 파서 샘을 터놨더니만 그랄의 목자들이 자기 우물이라고 주장하면서 다투어서 우물 이름이 Esek 이스크라고 다툼의 우물이 되었고요. 그래서 다른 우물을 팠더니만 또 그랄 사람들이 자기네 우물이라고 해서 그 우물은 적대를 의미하는 Sitnah 싯나 라고 지었답니다. 

 

 

 이삭의 우물 르호봇

 

22. And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, saying, "For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitiful in the land."

 

원주민들간의 다툼이 진행되니 이삭은 그랄 지역에서 조금 떨어진 곳에 우물을 파서 그 우물 이름을 르호봇이라고 짓습니다. 르호봇의 위치는 현재까지도 확인할 수는 없지만 니게브 사막 어디쯤이라고 보고 있는 듯합니다. 이삭이 이곳에 우물을 판 후 더 이상의 분쟁은 생기지 않았다고 하는데요. 르호봇은 히브리어로 넓은 장소, 방 혹은 넓은 공간을 의미합니다. 이 우물이 의미하는 것은 창조주께서 아무도 다투지 않고 번성할 수 있는 요충지를 만들어 주셨다는 점입니다. 확실한 점유지 확보를 의미하는 것 같은데요. 아브라함과 이삭을 지켜주는 하나님이 부러울 뿐입니다.

 

 그랄의 군인들이 이삭에게 화해를 요청

 

23. From there he went up to Beersheba.

24. And the Lord appeared to him the same night and said, "I am the God of Abraham your father. Fear not, for I am with you and will bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake."

25.So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord and pitched his tent there. And there Isaac's servants dug a well.

26. When Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army,

27. Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have sent me away from you?"

28. They said, "We see plainly that the Lord has been with you. So we said, let there be a sworn pact between us, between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you, 

 

plainly: 명백히, 노골적으로, 확실히, 솔직히, 꾸밈없이, 

 

29. that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the Lord."

 

르호봇 우물을 파고 비르셰바로 갔더니만 하나님이 강림하셔서 말씀하시길 자신의 종 아브라함을 생각해서 이삭 너에게도 축복하고 자손을 번성하겠다고 확언하십니다. 축복을 또 하고 또 하고 그러시네요. 암튼 그래서 이삭이 그 자리에서 제를 올리고 우물을 파고 있었습니다. 그랬더니 그랄의 고문과 군사령관 아훗삿과 피콜이 등장합니다. 이삭이 말하길 쫓아낼 때는 언제고 왜 찾아왔느냐고 하니 이들이 말하길 하나님이 너희와 함께하는 것을 분명히 보았다. 그러니 잘 부탁한다 그런 의미로 말을 한 모양입니다. 그러면서 너희에게 털끝하나도 안 건드렸으니 니들도 우리 좀 도와 도. 이런 뉘앙스였겠죠. 그래소 일종의 연맹 혹은 동맹 같은 것을 맺은 모양입니다. 

 

 

 

 맹세의 우물 브엘세바

 

30.So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.

31. In the morning they rose early and exchanged oaths. And Isaac sent them on their way, and they departed from him in peace.

32. That same day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well that they had dug and said to him, " We have found water."

33. He called it Shibath; therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.

 

이삭과 그랄 군인들과 파티를 하고 일종의 동맹을 맺으면서 이들이 떠났고 그리고 우물을 발견하여 이삭이 그 우물을 세바라고 지었다고 합니다. 세바는 맹세 혹은 숫자 7을 의미하는 히브리어에서 파생되었다고 합니다.

 

 이삭과 레베카의 고민

 

34. When Esau was forty years old, he took Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite to be his wife, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and they made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah.

 

그렇게 우물 이야기가 이어지더니 34절은 뜬금없이 이삭의 아들 에서가 마흔에 헷족, 히타이트인 두 여자와 결혼하였는데 헷사람 엘론의 딸 바세마는 이삭과 레베카의 근심이 되었다는 이야기가 나옵니다. 예고편으로 등장한 것 같으니 다음 장이 또 너무 궁금해지는 순간입니다.
