창세기 17장은 하나님이 아브람을 민족의 아버지로 만들겠다며 아브라함으로 만들고 사래는 사라로 개칭하고 그녀에게 아들 이삭을 점지해 주겠다고 합니다. 그리고 왕도 되고 왕자도 수두룩하게 만들어 주는 대신 너희들은 그에 대한 약속으로 할례를 받아야 된다고 하여서 13살의 이스마엘을 비롯한 아브라함 슬하 모든 남성들이 포피를 벗겨내는 끔찍한 할례를 받는 내용입니다.
또 아브람에게 축복을 내리고 아브라함으로 개명?
창세기17장
1. When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, " I am God Almighty, walk before me, and be blameless.
almighty: 전능한, 만능의, 대단한, 어마어마한.
2. that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly."
3. Then Abrm fell on his face. And God said to him,
4. "Behold, my father of a multitude of nations.
multitude: 다수, 수많음, 군중, 많은 사람.
5. No longer shall your name be called Abram, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.
아브라함은 대체 어떤 인물이기에 하나님이 복을 주시고 또 주시는지 참 복이 많은 인물인 것 같습니다. 아브람이 99세가 되었을 때 하나님이 당신을 만능의, 혹은 전능한 하나님이라고 소개하고 아브라함에게 내 앞에서 완전하라며 둘 사이 언약을 맺고 축복을 선포하십니다. 즉, 너에게 모든 영광을 줄 터이니 너는 내 앞에서 흠잡을 데 없는 모습을 보이라고 하신 듯. 그리고 열국의 아비란 의미로 아브람에서 아브라함이라고 이름을 다시 지어주십니다.
가나안 땅을 선물로 주시겠다네
6. I will make you exceedingly fruitiful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you.
exceedingly: 대단히, 매우, 굉장히, 엄청나게.
7. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.
8. And I will give to you and to your sojournings, all the Land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God."
충성맹세 남성 할례 문화의 시작
9. And God said to Abraham, " As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations.
10. This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised.
circumcised: 할례, 포경 수술,
창조주는 아브라함에게 거듭 충성 맹세를 확인받으시고 그에 대한 표식으로 할례를 알려줍니다. 남자의 포피를 잘라내는 이 할레 문화는 이집트에서 유래한 것으로 일종의 위생 차원에서 시행했다고 보기도 하지만 그보다는 종교적 이유가 더 가깝다고 합니다. 사실 종교적인 의미보다 위생적 의미가 더 강한 것 같은데요. 고온다습한 기온에서 감염을 예방하는 방법으로 이 방법이 최선이었다고 보는 견해도 있고요. 고대 사람들이 어쩌자고 이런 무모한 일을 하게 되었는지 참으로 아이러니합니다. 사실 무모함인지 과학인지는 알 수 없는 노릇이고요.
11. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.
12. He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised. Every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house or bought with your money from my foreigner who is not of your offspring,
13. both he who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money. shall surely be circumcised. So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant.
14. Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant."
그렇게 하여 생후 8일이 된 남아는 무조건 할례를 받아야 하며 주인 노예 외국인 이방인 할 것 없이 반드시 할례를 받아야 한다고 명하고 있습니다.
사라에게 아들을 점지해 주겠다는 하나님
15. And God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.
아브람이 아브라함으로 바뀐 것처럼 사래도 사라도 이름을 바꿔 부르라고 하셨고요.
16. I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of people shall come from her."
그러더니 사라에게 백성의 왕이 될 아들을 낳게 해 주겠다고 하십니다.
17. Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, " Shall a child be born to a man who is ahundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?"
이 말을 듣고 아브라함은 엎드려 웃으며 말합니다. 백세에 아들이 태어난다고? 사라 나이 90살인데 가능할까나?
18. And Abraham said to God, " Oh that Ishmael might live before you!"
19. God said, " No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.
20. As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold I have blessed him and will make him fruitiful and multiply him greatly. He shall father twelve princes, and I will make him into a great nation.
21. But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this time next year."
그러면서 앞서 태어난 이스마엘 얘기를 하니 그 애는 따로 번성한 국가의 12 왕자를 낳게 할 것이고 태어날 아이 이삭으로 영원한 언약을 세우겠다며 아이는 내년에 태어날 거라고 예언하십니다.
포피를 떼어서 할례를 표시
22. When he had finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham.
23. Then Abraham took Ishmael his son and all those born in his house or bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day, as God had said to him.
창조주의 언약이 있은 후 아브라함은 순종의 아이콘인 만큼 군말 없이 창조주 명에 따릅니다. 아들 이스마엘을 비롯한 그의 식솔들의 포피를 떼어서 써컴시즌을 거행합니다.
24. Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
25. And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
26. That very day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised.
27. And all the men of his house, those born in the house and those bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.
이스마엘이 할례를 받은 나이는 13살이고 아무튼, 당시로서는 이게 뭔 난리냐 싶었을 것 같습니다.
