초막절이 생기고 엘엘로헤이스라엘의 의미 창세기 33장

창세기 33장은 에서와 야곱의 화해 과정과 야곱이 임시 장막을 치고 광야에 머물면서 그것이 일종의 연례행사가 되어 지금까지 이어오고 있는 초막절이 되었고 야곱은 가나안 땅 초입에 또다시 신성한 의미를 부여하며 점유해 가기 시작합니다.

 

 

 

형에게 7번이나 절하며 다가간 야곱

 

창세기 32장 야곱의 씨름 편에 이어 33장 에서를 만난 야곱에 관한 이야기 편입니다.

 

1.And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two female servants.

2. And he put the sevants with their children in front, then Leah with her children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all.

3. He himself went on before them, bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

 

창세기 32장 에서에게 공들이는 야곱

 

창세기 32장 드디어 야곱이 라반의 곁을 떠나 고향 땅을 밟으려고 하지만 에서의 분노가 사그라지지 않았을 것이란 우려에 극도로 공을 들이고 조심하는 야곱입니다. 앞서 야곱은 텐트를 두 개로 나누고 만발의 준비를 한가운데, 33장에서는 레아와 레아의 식솔들은 먼저 보내고 라헬과 라헬의 아들 요셉만 데리고 에서에게 다가가면서 7번의 절을 합니다. 그만큼 백배사죄를 의미하는 걸까요?

 

 

 

 형님먼저 아우먼저

 

4. But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.

5. And when Esau lifted up his eyes and saw the women and children, he said, "Who are these with you?" Jacob said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant."

 

graciously: 우아하게, 상냥하게, 고맙게도, 자비롭게, 사회적으로 아랫사람에게 상냥한, 정중한, 공손한.

 

6. Then the servants drew near, they and their children, and bowed down.

7. Leah likewise and her children drew near and bowed down. And last Joseph and Rachel drew near, and they bowed down.

8. Esau said, "What do you mean by all this company that I met?" Jacob answered, "To find favour in the sight of my lord."

9. But Esau said, "I have enough, my brother, keep what you have for yourself."

10. Jacob said, "No, please, if I have found favour in your sight, then accept my present from my hand. For I have seen your face, which is like seeing the face of God, and you have accepted me.

11. Please accept my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough." Thus he urged him, and he took it.

 

분위기가 화기애애한 가운데 야곱은 차례로 가족들을 인사시킵니다. 그리고 에서는 이 많은 재물은 무엇이냐고 묻고 주님께 은혜를 받기 위해서였다고 한 것인지 주님의 은혜 덕분으로 받은 것이라고 했는지 아무튼 에서에게 주는 것이었고, 에서는 자신은 충분히 많으니 아우가 다 가지라고 하고 아우 야곱은 형님 꺼라면서 돈독한 우애를 드러내었습니다.

 

 

 임시 거주지의 상징 수코(Succoth)

 

 

 

 

12. Then Esau said, "Let us journey on our way, and I will go ahead of you.

13. But Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are frail, and that the nursing flocks and herds are a care to me, If they are driven hard for one day,  all the flocks will die.

14. Let my lord pass on ahead of his servant, and I will lead on slowly, at the pace of the livestock that are ahead of me and at the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir."

15. So Esau said, "Let me leave with you some of the people who are with me." But he said, "What need is there? Let me find favour in the sight of my lord."

16. So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.

17. But Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built himself a house and made boots for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.

 

에서는 야곱에게 동행하여 세일로 가자고 하니 야곱은 가축들과 어린 아이들과 같이 가야 한다고 사양하고 에서는 경호할 수 있는 부하들을 두고 먼저 길을 떠납니다. 에서는 가축들이 머물 수 있는 우사 및 가족들을 위한 임시 거주지를 짓고 이름을 수코라고 짓습니다. 장소 의미로 수코는 훗날 임시 거주지를 상징하는 의미로 쓰이게 됩니다. 이후 9월이나 10월에 초막절이라고 하여 광야를 여행하며 임시 거주지를 짓고 축제를 벌이는 초막절 행사가 생겼다고 합니다. 7일 동안 임시 장막을 치고 머물면서 야자나무, 쑥갓, 버드나무 가지를 흔들며 주님 앞에서 기뻐하는 축제를 벌였다고 합니다.

 

 

 

 엘엘로헤 이스라엘 의미

 

 

18. And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, on his way from Paddan-aram, and he camped before the city.

19. And from the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, he bought for a hundred pieces of money the piece of land on which he had pitched his tent.

20. There he erected an altar and called it EL-Elohe-Israel.

 

그리고 야곱은 가나안의 세겜 도시로 가서 성읍 앞에서 장막을 치고 아브라함이 아내를 위해 장지를 샀던 것처럼 장막 밭의 주인에게 돈을 지불하고 그 제단을 엘 엘로헤 이스라엘이라고 합니다. 엘엘로헤이스라엘은 많은 선성하고 거룩한 의미를 담고 있습니다. 그리고 야곱이 걸어온 행적을 종합하기도 합니다. 야곱이 천사와 싸우고 승리한 신성한 만남, 그리고 천사로부터 불린 이스라엘 그리고 마지막에 에서와의 화해를 인정한 것을 의미한다고 합니다. 뭐 그렇게까지 거창한 의미가 필요한 것인지 이해가 가진 않지만요. 가나안 땅을 점령하기 위한 일종의 포석 중 하나가 아닌가 합니다.
