고향으로 돌아가는 야곱은 에서의 환심을 사기 위해 노력 중(창세기 32장 1절~21절)

창세기 32장은 야곱이 고향으로 가는 길에 하나님의 천사를 만나고 그 와중에 아부성 멘트를 날리며 그 자리를 마하나임이라고 짓습니다. 그리고 에서에게 전령을 보내 수많은 재물을 가지고 가니 자신을 받아 달라는 뉘앙스의 메시지를 보냅니다. 형을 만나러 가는 야곱의 기쁨과 두려움이 느껴지는 구절입니다.

 

 

하나님의 군대 마하나임 

 

 

창세기 31장 미스바 언약식에 이어 32절 내용은 어떻게 전개될지 궁금합니다. 포스팅을 하면서 공부하는 모드라서요.

 

1. Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

2. And when Jacob saw them he said, "This is God's camp!" So he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

 

그렇게 훈훈한 마무리를 하면서 야곱은 가족들과 길을 떠나는 데 하나님의 천사들을 만나게 됩니다. 여기서 또 공상이 시작됩니다. 하나님의 천사들을 길을 가다 만났다는 게 좀 생뚱맞지 않나요?

 

 

 

 

 

 

창세기에는 아담과 이브가 에덴 정원에서 쫓겨날 때 지천사들이 에덴 정원을 수비하였고 하갈이 사라를 피해 도망을 갔을 때도 마치 정찰병 같은 천사들을 만납니다. 소돔과 고모라 난리 때도 그와 비슷한 천사들이 등장하고요. 그런 것을 보면 왠지 하나님은 인간계와는 다른 영역에 사는 특별한 수장이 아닌가 하고 천사라는 이름도 일종의 무장한 군대가 아닌가 싶은 생각이 들기도 합니다. 이 구절에서도 하나님의 천사를 만나자 야곱이 대뜸 하는 소리가 여기가 하나님의 캠프라고 합니다. 한글 성경에는 하나님의 군대라고 합니다. 하나님의 군대란 표현이 좀 무시무시하게 느껴집니다. 뭔가 확실한 지배계층이란 생각이 들지 않나요? 그렇게 따지면 야곱을 포함한 야곱의 조상은 하나님 나라의 충실한 앞잡이가 맞는 것 같고요. 아무튼, 야곱은 천사들에게 이곳이 하나님의 군대라고 말하여 천사들을 만난 장소를 마하나임으로 규정합니다.

 

 

 

 형 에서가 있는 곳으로 찾아간 야곱

 

 

3. And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

4. instructing them, "Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, 'I have sojourned with Laban and stayed until now.

5. I have oxen, donkeys flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, in order that I may find favour in your sight."

6. And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and there are four hundred men with him."

7. Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed. He Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two camps,

8. thinking, "If Esau comes to one camp and attacks it, then the camp that is left will escape."

 

야곱은 형이 있는 에돔에게 전령을 보내 형을 만나길 원한다며 많은 가축과 재산 등을 가져왔다는 식으로 에서에게 알려줍니다. 그러자 에서가 야곱을 찾아 왔는데 그의 뒤로 400명의 부하들을 거닐고 왔습니다. 그러자 야곱은 기쁘면서도 한편으로는 두려운 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서 또 꾀를 내는데 진영을 둘로 나눠 에서가 한쪽을 공격하면 다른 한쪽 캠프는 도망을 가자고 합니다.

 

 

 

 하나님 조상님께 일종의 협박성 기도를 하는 야곱

 

9. And Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O Lord who said to me, 'Return to your country and to your kindred, that I may do you good, '

10. I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

 

deed: 행위, 업적, 공적, 실행.

steadfast: 고정된, 확고한, 부동의.

 

11. Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, that he may come and attack me, the mothers with the children.

12. But you said, 'I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude."

 

야곱은 형 에서가 두렵긴 두려웠던 모양입니다. 뭔가 형이 자신을 해칠까 봐서인지 하나님도 찾고 그의 조상 아브라함부터 아버지 이삭까지 외치며 자기 혼자 지팡이 하나 들고 요단강 건너갔다 많은 재물을 쌓아왔는데 형이 자신을 죽일까 두렵다. 그러면서 자기가 걱정하는 것은 고향에 있는 엄마와 친족들을 해치지나 않을까 하는 거다며, 하나님이 그러지 않았느냐 내가 고향에서 바다의 모래알처럼 많은 자손을 번성하겠다고 등등 말입니다. 기도와 약속은 이루어지겠죠. 

 

 

 에서의 환심을 사기 위해 노력과 꾀를 내는 야곱

 

 

 

13. So he stayed there that night, and from what he had with him he took a present for his brother Esau,

14. two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

15. thirty milking camels and their calves, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.

16. These he handed over to his servants, "Pass on ahead of me and put a space between drove and drove."

17. He instructed the first, "When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, 'To whom do you belong? Where are you going? And whose are these ahead of you?'

 

instruct: 가르치다, 교육하다, 지시하다.

 

18. then you shall say, 'They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a present sent to my lord Esau. And moreover, he is behind us.'"

19. He likewise instructed the second and the third and all who followed the droves, "You shall say the same thing to Esau when you find him, 

20. and you shall say, 'Moreover, your servant Jacob is behind us.'" For he thought, " I may appease him with the present that goes ahead of me, and afterwards I shall see his face. Perhaps he will accept me."

21. So the present passed on ahead of him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.

 

appease: 달래다, 진정시키다, 가라앉히다, 풀어주다, 충족하다.

 

 

 

야곱이 에서를 만나기 위해 기쁘면서도 두려운 이유는 과오가 있기 때문입니다. 아버지 이삭을 속이고 형 대신 축복을 받았던 에피소드가 있잖아요? 그런 관계로 야곱은 외삼촌 라반이 있는 곳으로 가서 장인 라반의 임금 착취로 20년간 타향살이를 하게 된 겁니다. 그렇게 해서 어쨌든 결과는 많은 식솔과 재물을 가지고 고향 땅으로 돌아오는데 에서가 야곱이 생명의 위협을 느끼는 것은 당연한 거겠죠. 그러나 항상 야곱은 에서보다 꾀가 많죠. 게다가 든든한 아군, 그것도 최고의 아군인 하나님의 축복을 받고 있잖아요? 

 

아무튼간에 야곱은 에서를 위해 줄 수많은 가축떼를 연출하여 에서 앞에 등장하려고 합니다. 그러나 창세기 32장에서 가장 중요한 내용은 브니엘과의 씨름 편일 겁니다. 씨름 얘기는 다음 편에 올리겠습니다.
